New Zealand!!Last Saturday we left Sydney and flew to Christchurch in New Zealand. The 23rd country we’ve been to now! After we landed and collected our bags and did the usual boring stuff we went to the rental car place to get our car. Then we went to Ski Time Lodge in Methven which was the place we were staying at. The next day we hired snowboards and drove up to Mt Hutt the 4th ski field we have been to. It was a really sketchy drive, almost as bad as the one in the Philippines where we had to drive across a river on 2 planks of wood! I don’t think I had started my blog yet when we did that. Anyway the drive on Mt Hutt was crazy. We were driving on the mountain and there was a massive drop on one side of us and on the other was the mountain. We had to park at windy point (the second car park) because the top car park was full. Then we had to get a bus up to the actual ski field. Once we had bought our ski passes we ate lunch because we were really hungry. After we ate we went half way up the mountain and did a few runs then we went up to the top and it was really fun. In 2015 Mt Hutt was voted the best ski field in New Zealand so that explains why it was so fun. We had to get a bus back to windy point so we lined up but there were no more spaces left in the bus so this mountain guide asked if we wanted a ride down to windy point in his car. We got in and there weren’t any actual seats, just these benches in the back of a four wheel drive. While we were driving down the mountain guide told us that only last month a guy drove right off the edge of the mountain and he rolled five times. But guess what? He only broke his pinkie finger and his rib.
The second day we did half a day and the third day we did the same. On the fourth day we drove for 5 hours to Queenstown. During the drive we stopped at Lake Tekapo and Tahina Cohen and I skimmed rocks while mum and dad had a swim! When we got there we checked into the Copthorne Lakeside Hotel and relaxed. The next day we hired snowboards and went to The Remarkables, the 5th ski field we have been to. Snowboarding in The Remarkables was fun but I think Mt Hutt was better. Today we woke up and at 10:30 we went to went to Queenstown Harbour to go jet boating! It was really really fun! Tomorrow we are going to wake up early and drive back to Methven so we can snowboard. The day after that we fly back to Australia.
Bye! Kalani

Christmas, My 11th birthday, Dentist

Hi everyone, sorry I haven’t been posting lately. I haven’t had time to. So today I’m going to talk about 3 things; Christmas (25/12/2015), My 11th birthday (16/01/2016)/ and The Dentist (08/02/2016).

Christmas

For Christmas day we didn’t really do anything. First we opened presents from Mum, Dad and Santa (we opened them really early because I woke everyone up) I got a scooter, a cossie, The Hunger Games movies, The Hunger Games books, Counting By 7s book, and lots of other things that I cant remember. Next we went to church because my grandma is Catholic and it is really important to her, church was boring. After church my grandma and grandpa and my other grandma  came over for lunch. The next day we went to Berrara (the caravan park that my grandpa owns) with all of my cousins except for Aunty Mel, Uncle Dylan, Harlow, Harlem, and Luxy. They couldn’t come because Aunty Mel was pregnant. It was really fun. We stayed there for 1 week.

My 11th Birthday

On my 11th birthday I didn’t have a party. I just got a few friends and went to the movies to see Goosebumps. I wanted to see The 5th Wave but I wasn’t allowed because I invited my cousins Harlow and Harlem and they weren’t allowed to see The 5th Wave. For my birthday I got; A computer, a drawing book, a bracelet, 2 gift vouchers, a headband, clothes, books, and other things. and Tahina and Cohen wrapped up a bunch of things I already owned! Tahina even wrapped up a library book and some of her old clothes she wanted to give me.

Dentist

Today I went to the dentist to get my herbst appliance or expander. Only I didn’t get an expander I got braces ): . First Peter (the orthodontist) put in the brackets, that took a looooooooong time. He then put in nickel titanium wire over it so my top teeth would all move evenly. Then he told me I have to make the most important decision: what colour “o rings” should I get? I chose light blue and very light purple. It still hurts now.

So that has been my blog. I hope you enjoyed it! Goodbye (:

Hello

Hi, today I’m going to do a random blog post because I just feel like doing my blog!

Yesterday we went to Flip out. It was so awesome! Flip out is a trampoline arena. There are trampolines every where even on the walls! There are also foam pits that you jump in. I kept jumping on the trampolines and doing front flips into the foam pits, it was so awesome! Also by coincidence we saw my aunty and my cousin Dakoda. We had lots of fun at Flip out.

Today my Grandma came over and so did my cousin Kirra.  Kirra dared me to ask my Grandma if she could twerk and guess what the answer was? YES and she tried to twerk. No I’m just kidding the answer was no. However, my other grandma twerked in the park a few days ago. We also swam in the pool for a long time until Kirra had to leave, so my brother, sister and I were left home alone. Kirra just came back a few minutes ago for a sleep over and she is reading this as I type it because she is waiting for me to finish so she can throw water balloons at me :D. To be precise she has 250 water balloons to throw at me.

Well that was my random blog. I hope you liked it! 😀 bye .

School

Hi, sorry  I haven’t been posting things lately. I’ve been busy at my new school (well not really busy because we have no homework, its more like I keep forgetting to do my blog).

I love my new school, its so cool! Lately my teacher Scott has been teaching me programming. He has also been showing me how to use Kali Linux (a hacking operating system.) Because its the end of the year we have only been doing follow up and some other kids have been doing memo (multiplication) as well, however because I am on the highest level of memo I don’t have to do it.

Ok there are 1, 2, 3, 4 things I want to talk about so I’m going to say them one by one:

1. A day at Montessori is like this: I come in and sign in, next I get out my work diary and write the time and the thing that I will be doing. The first thing I usually do is memo, so I do memo and then write the time I finish. By then I’m probably a bit hungry so I’ll get out my lunch box and eat a snack. After snack, I do whatever math I’m up to and write it in my work diary. When I have completed my maths, I do spelling and punctuation. Then I’ll probably get a lesson from Allison or Scott on something like geography, geometry. When the lesson is complete,  I’ll do the follow up for that lesson. I have to write everything in my work diary. At 11:45 its pack up so I give my work diary to my teacher and do my job. My job changes every week and every kid has a job to do. For example, pack away tables and chairs, clean the bathroom or cleaning the back room.  After our jobs are done, we eat lunch and then go outside to play. When we get back its silent reading so we get a book and read it. When thats done if its a Thursday or Friday sometime in the afternoon we’ll have book club. We can work on whatever we want in the afternoon as long as its productive. When the day is over we wait outside the gate for our parents and when they are here we go home. Thats a day at Montessori.

2. In my class we did a Kris Kringle. I got a girl called Rebecca. I gave her the new 1 Direction album “Made in the A.M” because she is obsessed with 1D . My sister’s best friend Claire got my name and she gave me this thing that projects stars all around the room. It is really cool.

3.  We have been doing a play, its a mix of Cleopatra, Hamlet and Romeo        and Juliette. The play was re-written by Cherie, our substitute teacher. We did the play on the last day of school . I was Cleopatra’s first hand maiden.

4. We did a Monti Mingle (Monti Mingle is basically a fair). It was really cool. My friends and I just did things that you would normally do at fair like; watch someone try and do front flips and keeps failing and then one of your best friends come over and does a perfect backflip. Things like that.

We are on school holidays now so for Christmas we might be going to Japan! Thats my blog, bye.

Montessori School

This afternoon at 1.00pm I went and visited my new school – a Montessori School. First we went inside the gates and went to the office. We met the admin/ enrolment lady. Her name is Bec. I know her last name but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say it here on my blog. She took us into the office and gave mum some paperwork. Then she showed us our class rooms and told us that Tahina and I would go with the 9 – 12 year olds, which is Stage 3. Cohen will be with the 6 – 9 year olds which is Stage 2. Bec also told us that during the morning period of school work, we could go down to the library anytime we wanted to, to get information. I think that is super cool. Then she took us back to the office and gave mum more paper work and introduced us to the principal. The principal’s name is Raquel. Raquel asked some questions about our travels and home school. For example I told Raquel that we go to the library and do our home school on our iPads for three hours. Raquel told us that at school, we will do less computers and more hand writing. I told Raquel that it was good (to do handwriting) because I like writing. After meeting Raquel, we organised with Bec to observe the school tomorrow morning at 9.30am. I am really looking forward to observing Montessori school. Bec also said we cannot officially start Montessori until the end of the week so it looks like Mum will be home schooling us until then!

Before our meeting today, I had already researched about Montessori and this is what I wrote about it.

Montessori is a type of school where you are given your school work for the fortnight and you do it within that period. You can work independently or in a group with friends. The idea of Montessori was created by an Italian physician, educator and innovator, Maria Montessori. She thought that kids should work independently and that kids should focus more on a subject that they are interested in.

The Montessori school puts different ages together in a classroom. These are the age groups: 3-6, 6-9, 9-12. I will be in the 9-12 year olds. The reason they have age groups is so that the little ones can learn from the older group and the older kids can learn to guide and be good role models.

Montessori School is different from normal public schools in many ways. This is how:

In Montessori, you don’t wear a school uniform;

You focus more on subjects that you like;

You can work on your school work when you want;

You have the freedom to ask questions;

The teachers try to guide you instead of telling you what to do;

Montessori looks more like a home rather than a school and I like that! That is what I know about Montessori so far.

Before we left Montessori School today, Bec asked me to write down any questions that I had. Here are my questions:

  1. Does the school have a canteen?
  2. How is Montessori different from Public School?
  3. What are the most important subjects in Montessori?
  4. What is the Montessori school bus used for?
  5. Do children go on excursions?
  6. Why are there no school uniform?
  7. How does a teacher or the school determine when a student can go up a level on a subject?

Bye!

Kalani.

Mum and Dad get married – again!

Hi, My mum and dad just got married in Kauai! On a secret beach just near St Regis Hotel, Kauai, Hawaii. My sister and I we’re flower girls and my little brother was a ring bearer. My brother also walked my mum down the aisle or the steps because there was no aisle. Cohen (my brother) walked mum down the stairs. Tahina (my sister) gave my dads ring to mum and I gave mums rings to dad. Next Frieda (the wedding celebrant) got my mum and dad to say their vows. After the vows Freida explained the sand ceremony and told mum and dad to get a scoop of sand from under each others feet and put it in a bowl. Next she got Cohen to do it, followed by Tahina and finally me. The wedding celebrant said “Now that you have mixed the sand together, it can never be separated into its normal piles. This represents that this family will forever be together.” She then told dad to put a lei on mum, next she told mum to put a lei on dad. She then told mum and dad to put a lei on Cohen, Tahina and me.

After the sand ceremony and lei exchange, she asked us kids if we wanted to say anything. Tahina, Cohen and I came up with a family motto and  this is what we said:

“We are the Hodges and we will love and support each other no matter what. We will have fun and learn while traveling the world together. We will be nice and happy and we will be awesome no matter what!”

Frieda was very touched and said it was one of the most beautiful things children had said at their parents wedding.

After we said our family motto, she asked mum and dad to put the rings on each other. When they exchanged rings, she told dad “You may now kiss the bride”! Tahina got embarrased when mum and dad kissed.

I liked being a flower girl. It was the second time I was a flower girl. The first time was for my mum’s cousin, Allan and Jane when they got married in the Philippines.

Bye!

P.S This is the wedding celebrants website: www.kauaiweddingofficiant.com

Also Frieda if you are reading this, you we’re the best wedding celebrant ever! Thank You for making it an awesome wedding!

University of the Philippines, Diliman.

Hi, yesterday I visited the University of the Philippines at Diliman. First my uncle Jal picked me and my family up from our apartment and he brought us to his new apartment so we could see Aunty Fe and Uncle Danny. Aunty Fe and Uncle Danny are not really our aunty and uncle. Mum says they are our great great aunty and uncle.

As usual when we go see Aunty Fe and Uncle Danny, they always have Rocky Road ice cream, mango juice and tocino prepared for us. Tocino is pork marinated in a special seasoning. When mum was little, aunty Fe used to do the same thing for her.

After our snack – we had fried bananas too, we walked on the road, around the Academic Oval. It was ok to walk on the roads because they close the roads on Sundays. There was this oval called “The Sunken Garden”. It is called that because every year it sinks two or three inches. It was super cool. The university was like a whole city, it even has it’s own postcode. I still remember it – 1101.

When we finished walking around, we went back to uncle Jal’s apartment and he gave me a book called Siddhartha. I really like it. Afterwards, we went out for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant and it was really good.

Finally uncle Jal dropped us home and it was time for bed because it was 11.00pm!

Byeeeeeee! 🙂

Capbreton, San Sebastian, Pamplona, Sardinia.

Hi we’ve been on the road for a week now. So far we have stayed at Capbreton. We didn’t do much, we went to the beach and had dinner right by the water. Then we went to San Sebastian and we stayed at the worst and stinkiest hotel ever. It was in the old part of San Sebastian and I don’t ever want to stay there ever again. It smelled old, like a yucky grandma and vomit. It was noisy outside because there were so many people partying.

After San Sebastian, we drove to Pamplona for the San Fermin Festival. San Fermin festival is the Running of the Bulls. It’s similar to Fête de Bayonne. Everyone wears white and red. We woke up at 5.45 in the morning and walked to the arena to watch the bull runners run into the arena. The running of the bulls starts at 8.00am each morning. They run for a kilometre towards the arena. We arrived at the arena at 6.30. The band came on to entertain the crowd and then the paramedics walked in. When they walked in, everybody cheers. Before the run, they put pictures of the bulls on the big screen with their names and weight. The heaviest bull was 600 kg! There was a countdown when the runners start to run. We watched the runners on the big screen and they came in just after 8.00am. When they come in, some jump over the fence and some stay in the arena because the ones that jump over the fence are scaredy cats and they don’t want to fight with the bulls. The brave ones stay and they release a bull one at a time and sometimes, two at a time. It was awesome and Cohen and Dad were being smart arses because they were clapping for the bulls. I wasn’t happy when I found out that at the end of the festival, they kill 13 of the bulls. I don’t think they should kill them because it’s cruel.

After the running of the bulls, we drove to Barcelona and caught a cruise ship to Sardinia. Sardinia is an island in Italy. So far we have hung out at the beach and there is this awesome hotel called Buddi Hotel. This morning I had a surf with dad and caught a couple of waves and the waves were really gutless. There was almost no waves. I think it is because there is no wind and we are at the Mediterranean Sea. The owner of the hotel is Francesco and he is really nice and the food is delicious. My favourite food is the seafood risotto.

Over the last three days we’ve been to three different beaches. We drove to La Pelosa beach, just past Stintino. Cohen couldn’t swim because he had a rash on his doodle. I went swimming with my sister Tahina and swam out to the buoy. The water was crystal clear.

The next day we drove to Castelsardo and swam between the rocks. We jumped off rocks and dove into the Mediterranean sea. We also went snorkelling and looked for dead sea urchins. We had a picnic on the rocks and ate roast chicken rolls. Castelsardo was really cool but I have tonnes of cuts from the rocks and reef.

Yesterday we drove 2 1/2 hours south to a beach called Cagliari. Cohen called it a waste of time because it was so hot, 36 degrees and the aircon in the car broke and we couldn’t find a hotel. We found a beach called BIkini beach but had to pay to sit on the beach. So we drove back to the other side of the island back to the same hotel, Buddi Hotel that we checked out of on the same day! Francesco kept laughing at us and he was really surprised to see us. Tahina and I played a trick on him and we walked in and said “We came back for the ravioli!”. Seriously, he has the best food. I like being back at this hotel because it is right across the road from the beach and Francesco is very nice.

Tonight we ate our last dinner at Francesco’s hotel. It was very delicious. I ate spaghetti with sea urchins. It tasted very seafoody and I really enjoyed it and ate all of it! I hope to come back to Sardinia and stay at Francesco’s hotel to see him.

Tomorrow we get back on the cruise ship to Barcelona. We are going to wake up at 5.30 in the morning. I’m looking forward to going back on the boat because it is going to be so much fun. The last time we were on it, it was night time and we didn’t get to see a lot of it.

My last day of French School.

Friday 3rd of July was my last day of school. My friends prepared a surprise for me. It was a book filled with drawings and messages about me and to me. Nice messages of course! They gave it to me during the last break of school. They also gave me a bunch of beautiful flowers. It was really really nice because it made me feel happy. I made some really good friends at Ecole Eléméntaire Aristide Briand and I will miss them all, especially Lilou, Maya, Pauline, Prune, Mila, Stella, Ellori, Margot, Jeahnne, Auria, Lucie, Chloe, Winona, Axelle, Noé, Yanis, Luigi, Mae-lou, Erine and Elise. When I walked out of school, my best friends were waiting outside the school gate for me and I asked them why there were all crying. They said it was because I was leaving school and leaving France. We all hugged for a very long time and we were all crying our eyes out, even my mum was crying! I am going to keep in touch with all my friends because I want to see them again. I hope to come back to France in 6 months. If I don’t go back to France in 6 months, I would really like to come here when I’m a teenager and go to high-school here.

School Camp at Labenne.

On Monday 29 June 2015, I went on a school camp to Labenne which is half an hour from our school. We all took our bikes with us and they put our bikes on a truck towed behind a bus. We went for three days and two nights. We arrived on Monday and as soon as we got there we unpacked our bags and got into our rooms. I slept with some of my best friends. They are Lilou, Maya, Pauline and Prune. We stayed in a hotel.

After we settled, we went for a test bike ride for an hour then we came back to eat lunch. Mum packed me some food which was pizza, two nectarines and a small kitkat. When we finished eating lunch, we had free play all afternoon and then we ate dinner. For entree we ate salad and then for main meal we ate rabbit. My friend Prune didn’t tell me it was rabbit until after I ate it. It was the first time I had eaten rabbit and it was delicious! I would eat it again. For dessert we had cherries. After dinner, we just went to bed.

On the following day, we ate cereal for breakfast and then we rode our bikes to the zoo. That day was 46 degrees! At the zoo we saw jaguars, zebras, llamas, wallabies, kangaroos and a tiny bear with a huge tail but I never knew what it was called because I had never seen it before. It was cool to see the kangaroos and wallabies, it reminded me of being back in Berrara in Australia.

After the zoo we rode back to the hotel and played y per viè plaqué which is like bullrush but instead of touching the other person, you have to tackle them down! I was the 3rd last person standing. Almost everyone tried to tackle me! We then rode our bikes to Hossegor to eat lunch. We all had a rabbit sandwich and potato chips then we played some games but everyone got bored of it so we had a water fight! At first the teachers didn’t want us to get wet but in the end, they joined in! I think I was the wettest because Enzo and Flavio kept on wetting me so I teamed up with Mila, one of my best friends and it was awesome! After our water fight, we rode back to the hotel and ate dinner. I cant remember what we ate that night but afterwards, the teachers put on a disco which was really fun because everyone was dancing. We went to bed at 11:00 at night. The next morning we didn’t do much, we just had free play and waited until the bus arrived. When the bus arrived we all got on and drove back to our school. We arrived at school at 4:00pm. All our parents were waiting for us. Before we left the school grounds, the teachers gave us a chocolatine which is a croissant filled with chocolate. I had such a good time at my camp. So thats the end of my blog.

Goodbye!
